Самовоспроизводящиеся структуры, постоянно присутствующие в ядрах клеток и при соответствующем окрашивании наблюдаемые во время деления клеток; число, размеры и форма хромосом строго специфичны для каждого вида. Хромосомы состоят из хромонем; играют важную роль в наследственной передаче свойств организма.
